A Simple Way to Turn ChatGPT Into a Review and Scoring Tool That Actually Knows Your Standards

You’ve been using ChatGPT or Claude to review your work. And to be fair, it’s trying. It comes back with feedback every time. But something about it might feel off. Too broad. Too safe. Like it’s reviewing a version of your work that could belong to anybody.

If that sounds familiar, it might not be a you problem. It might be a setup problem. In my experience, AI tends to give generic feedback when it doesn’t yet know your standards, because nobody’s given them yet.

The good news is there’s a simple way to fix that, and it starts with something called a scoring matrix.

A Valuable Piece You Might Be Missing

Think about the last piece of content you reviewed before it went out, yours or someone else’s. Chances are you had a mental checklist running in the background. You might not have been thinking about it consciously, but it was probably there.

Tone. Clarity. Does the opening hook? Does the CTA make sense? Is it written for the right person?

That instinct is often what’s missing from AI feedback. And in my experience, once you hand it that instinct, spelled out as clear categories with clear definitions of what good and not-good look like, the feedback tends to get a lot more useful.

That’s the idea behind a scoring matrix.

What a Scoring Matrix Actually Is

A scoring matrix is a set of instructions you give ChatGPT or Claude once. It tells the tool:

  • What categories to evaluate your work on
  • What excellent looks like in each category
  • What weak or missing looks like in each category
  • What score (0-5) to assign, with 4 being your minimum standard

Once it’s set up, you share your content and say “go to work.” You get back a scored breakdown, category by category, with specific suggestions on anything that missed the mark.

Instead of “use clear language,” you might get something like: “Your opening scores a 2. It starts with background context rather than a reader frustration, here’s one way to approach that differently.”

That kind of feedback tends to be a lot easier to act on.

Before and After: What This Might Look Like in Practice

Here’s a quick example using a blog post review.

Without a scoring matrix, you paste your article into ChatGPT and say “please review this.”

What comes back might sound something like: “This is a well-structured article. Consider strengthening your headline and adding a clearer call to action. The content is informative and easy to read.”

Not wrong, but probably not what you were hoping for either.

With a scoring matrix, you’ve already told ChatGPT your five categories: Headline Strength, Opening Hook, Clarity of Main Point, Actionability, and Closing/CTA. You’ve defined what a 5, a 3, and a 1 look like in each.

Now you paste your article and say “go to work.”

What you might get back:

  • Headline Strength: 3/5 – “Relevant topic but no emotional hook. Doesn’t hint at a solution or outcome.”
  • Opening Hook: 2/5 – “Opens with background. Reader isn’t acknowledged until paragraph three.”
  • Clarity of Main Point: 4/5 – “Clear through-line. Could be stated more directly in the intro.”
  • Actionability: 5/5 – “Specific steps with examples. Reader knows exactly what to do next.”
  • Closing/CTA: 3/5 – “CTA feels disconnected from the article’s main promise.”

That kind of breakdown tends to make it pretty clear where to focus your next round of edits.

How to Build Yours

You don’t need to start from scratch. I put together a sample scoring matrix built around blog posts and articles that you can use immediately, or adapt for whatever you review most. Sales proposals, emails, social posts, employee work. The structure stays the same. You just swap in your own categories and define what good looks like in each.

A Simple Way to Start Today

The biggest shift here isn’t a new tool or a new feature. It’s taking 20 minutes to spell out what you already know instinctively:

  • Pick the content type you review most often
  • Write down three to five things you always look for
  • Define what excellent and weak looks like in each
  • Use the sample as a starting point if you need one
  • Drop it into a Project, Custom GPT, or Claude Skill so it’s always ready

The first time you get back scored, specific feedback instead of general advice, I think you’ll find it was worth the setup time.

AI isn’t broken when it gives you vague feedback. It just hasn’t learned your standards yet. Give it those, and you might be surprised how useful it becomes.
